Tell me what you eat, I'll tell you who you are." ~Anthelme Brillat-Savarin
This quote is on Jolene's blog and it has always intrigued me. In a way, I agree with it. Then again, with my ed history, my relationship with food is...well...different. I am very aware of my options. And I am very aware of what I like and how I like it. What does that say about me? When I know what I want in life, I go for it. With food, it doesn't always have to be the healthiest dish. Some days I want a juicy burger, some fries, and, of course, dessert. But for some meals I really do crave a salad with lots of goodies (and dessert). Same goes for my life. I may not always make the most responsible decisions, but if I am following my heart and allowing myself to be good at what I do, then I can be happy to be living this life.
Now for a fun question. If you had to describe yourself or your life in one meal, what would it be?
Appetizer:
Homemade tortillas, fresh guacamole, and a mango salsa
I love it when I am excited about my life. This course conveys my passion for color and how I express myself through my creative outlets. Simple, fresh tortillas are tasty and fun at the same time. And the salsa and guac are good for you and absolutely delicious. I don't like to do things on anyone else's schedule, just my own. This is these are tortillas and not chips.
Main course:
Pizza pot pies
These will look beautiful and put together on the oatsie. But as soon as you break through the crust, the cheese and sauce will ooze out uncontrollaby. This symbolizes the messier parts of my life. I have always tried my hardest to keep a happy, put together face, even when I am boiling and oozing on the inside. On the surface it may look innocent enough, but on the inside...there so much, so much more.
Dessert:
Chocolate chip cookies out of the oven with a glass of milk
I know what I like, and a plate of cookies and milk brings anyone and everyone together. Also, it is Snata's favorite treat. It brings together the hope I have for my future. I hope to always find hope and joy in any experience. Milk and cookies symbolize comfort and joy to me. There was even a point in time when I declared cookies as my favorite food.
Today I wanted a pumpkin breakfast. So what did I do? I made a pumpkin cake!
Pumpkin Breakfast Cake
1/4 cup wheat flour
pinch of baking powder
cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg
1/3 cup pumpkin
splash of milk
1 egg white
Stir together in a rammekin.
Cook in the microwave for 1 1/2 minutes. Allow to cool and remove from the rammekin.
I ended up with a little round pumpkin cake.
Topped with some cottage cheese, it was a very satsfying breakfast. Next time I may add a little bit of sugar or sweetener. Or maybe I will make a chocolate peanut butter version? Who knows! I love playing around with my breakfast.
I cooked venison again tonight! This time I made bacon-wrapped filets.
Seared and wrapped in bacon
And then baked in the oven until cooked through.
Delicious! I actually really like deer meat. It is so tender and lean. And the flavor isn't as gamey as I expected it to be.
I made Garlic Buttermilk mashed potatoes based on the Kitchen Witch's recipe. I met her briefly at FoodBuzz and have been loving her recipes. This one inspired me to throw together the first batch of mashed potatoes that I have made in a while.
Just gold potatoes boiled and then baked with minced garlic, butter, buttermilk, salt and pepper.
A good meat and potatoes meal. It doesn't get much better than that. Actually, I have never been a big meat and potatoes girl. I'm more of a pizza and salad girl or a burger and onion rings girl. But this was a very delicious meal.
Hope you had a great day. Happy Thanksgiving Eve eve!
have a very happy and healthy thanksgiving, astrid. you deserve it
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how easy that breakfast cake recipe is!!! It looks so fancy :-)
ReplyDeleteYour question is REALLY hard!!! I have no idea, but it definitely gives me something to think about!!
Describe myself in one meal? Rye bread with tahini on top. Incredibly simple, but anything but average ;) .. If you can even call that a meal? I would call it a snack. Haha!
ReplyDeleteI love your pizza pot pie analogy!
I'm a big fan of venison and a bigger fan of bacon. Hubby just brought home a deer recently so I'll have to give that a try. Thanks for trying the mashers, hope you enjoyed them.
ReplyDeleteYou're question was very thought provoking and quite difficult! On the fly, I'd say for me, an appetizer would be bacon wrapped scallops or geoduck fritters, it speaks mostly of my Northwest heritage and being the daughter of a fisherman. For a main course, it would have to be a fusion of foods from around the world. I've traveled for 22 years and it has turned me into a very complex person in many ways (at least comparitive to my brethren here). For my final course, it would be a simple cheese tray with a fabulous aged wine. I've come full circle and am trying to get back to a simpler life...the wine, things just get better as they get older!
Yuuuuummmm!! I really hope Steven realizes what a lucky man he is to have a cook like you for a gf!!
ReplyDeleteI miss you! I'm still around from time to time. Stop by and say hello when you can. Xoxox <3
Lasagne and chocolate chip cookies with milk!!
ReplyDeletethe pumpkin breakfast cake looks amazing! i wanna try!
ReplyDelete"... if I am following my heart and allowing myself to be good at what I do, then I can be happy to be living this life."
ReplyDeleteAs a college counselor, I just loved reading this.
I've never tried deer meat before! Now you have me intrigued... I loooove elk and picturing it being along the same lines as that.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what my appetizer and dessert would be, but my main meal would be a PB&J sandwich. Boring bread on the outside, but a sweet and simple flavour on the inside :)
